Before the line moves

Plan the whole system.

A capstan hoist is only one component of a material-handling system. The load, mounting, rope, rigging, power source, route, communication, and people in the area must be controlled together.

This course explains the awareness principles behind a safe plan. It does not replace the owner’s manual, a hands-on practical evaluation, employer authorization, or a task-specific lift plan.

Learning outcomes

Recognize what must be verified.

1

Plan the full route

Identify the actual load, limiting component, mounting, path, and responsible roles.

2

Inspect before use

Recognize conditions that require removal from service and controlled follow-up.

3

Control the movement

Keep people clear, test deliberately, and stop when communication or conditions change.

4

Document practical readiness

Use the field sheet with an employer-designated qualified or competent evaluator.

Planning tools

Construction Plan Studio

Use the calculator to organize the route, load information, roles, and planning notes before the employer-approved work plan is finalized.

Course outline

Expanded lessons with cartoon learning guides, linked original manufacturer figures, model-specific scenarios, field-decision exercises, module checks, inspection logs and a printable practical evaluation.

1

1. Scope, roles, and stop-work authority

Set the awareness boundary and identify who may plan, operate, observe, and evaluate the work.

  • Awareness is not operating authorization
  • Stop-work conditions and exclusion zones
  • CHANCE, Thern, and Harken: identify the equipment
  • Read the right manual and resolve conflicts
2

2. Plan the system before power

Confirm the load, mounting, route, communication, and limiting component before operation.

  • Know the actual load and limiting component
  • Mounting, rigging, and communication
  • CHANCE pole, tower-leg and vehicle mounting
  • Thern and Harken: mounts are not interchangeable
3

3. Inspection and removal from service

Inspect the hoist, rope, controls, mount, rigging, and work area before each use.

  • Pre-use inspection
  • Rope condition, route, and wraps
  • Rope selection and routing by manufacturer
  • Inspection schedules and defect decisions
4

4. Controlled operation and load management

Use a deliberate test, controlled movement, and safe distance from rotating equipment and suspended material.

  • Test before full travel
  • Operate only within the approved plan
  • CHANCE and Thern: lifting, holding and lowering
  • HighTailer: complete rope route and controlled descent
5

5. Power sources, environment, and emergency response

Recognize electric, hydraulic, gasoline, weather, and emergency hazards before operation.

  • Power-source hazards
  • Emergency stop, shutdown, and care
  • Match the power supply, duty cycle and PPE
  • Load-path cases: redirects, snags and changing angles
6

6. Practical evaluation, documentation, and review

Understand what a documented hands-on evaluation must verify and where this course stops.

  • Employer practical evaluation
  • Inspection logs, maintenance and return to service
  • Demonstrations and model-specific practical checks
  • Final review and knowledge assessment
7

Applied field decisions and evidence review

Work through six realistic decisions, explain the missing evidence, and verify the release conditions.

  • Choose by configuration, not by the word capstan
  • Trace the load path into the support
  • Distinguish pulling, holding and lowering
  • Inspect rope through its working length
  • Recognize the difference between a test and a proof load
  • Make the inspection log close the loop
